Vintage Sunday - the 80s take II.

Last week I was reminiscing about the 80s. It was an era that gave us Flash dance, Rubic's cube and neon - that has made a great comeback. We watched Dynasty and listened to Madonna and New Kids on The Block (at least I did..).
But today let's concentrate more on the fashion. The only cover I could find from 1981 - the year I was born - was August issue of Vogue with Princess Diana who just got married to Charles. Wasn't she pretty?!
Towards the end of the 80s the supermodels have started to appear. As you can see Christy Turlington and Cindy Crawford were among the first. Claudia, Stephanie and more followed. They all looked very fresh faced no? What is your favourite memory/thing that came out of the 80s?

Vintage Sunday - the 80s

Today's Vintage Sunday post was inspired by my recent obsession with the 80s. I was born in 1981 so lived through most of it, although I obviously don't remember it all. But there was something about that era no? I mostly love the music and have been listening to it a lot lately - hence this post. From Madonna, Michael Jackson through Eurythmics, U2 to Chicago, Reo Speedwagon and many more, didn't the 80s just sound great. I have to admit the clothes weren't that amazing but it's fun to look at it and reminisce.
I found this Vogue cover from the 80s with Linda Evangelista on the it. As mentioned many times before, she was one of my favourite 'supers'. Mainly for her constant hair changes. I love a bit of a change.
I love the colour combo and simplicity of the cover.
What was your 80s favourite model/singer/movie/song..? I think I'll get back to this again because as Calvin Harris says.. "I've got love for you if you were born in the 80s.." ;)

Vintage Sunday - Miss Pink in the making

Today's Vintage Sunday post I slightly different.. The photograph above is vintage that's for sure. The photographer is no one famous, but my dad and the little Miss Pink in the making would be me and styled by me too :) I am wearing a pink polo shirt that my mum bought me on her trip to Vienna, therefore it was extra special. I believe I was around six.

Vintage Sunday - Paolo Roversi

Few days ago I found out, that I missed an exhibition of Paolo Roversi in London, which finished in March. I'm disappointed as he's one of my favourite fashion photographers, so to celebrate his work I decided to dedicate him today's Vintage Sunday post. This amazon picture of Laetitia Casta just spoke to me, when I was trying to pick something. His work is amazing and this is definitely a good example of it. More on my tumblr.

Greek designers in London exhibition

Last week (on the last day) I managed to go and see the Greek designers in London exhibition and it was great. We were allowed to take pictures and I took loads to share with you. The amazing contemporary designers displayed there were Marios Schwab, Mary Katrantzou and Sophia Kokosalaki, you can read about some of the older ones in my Vintage Sunday post.

Vintage Sunday by Jean Dessés

On Thursday afternoon I went to see the Greek designers exhibition I told you about before and I'm going to write about it more next week and apart from the modern designers like Mary Katrantzou and Marios Schwab they displayed some stuff of the older ones as well.
One of them was Jean Dessés and other than his actual creations, you could see these beautiful drawings he did of his designs. I thought they were very pretty and perfect for Vintage Sunday post. The Greek designer moved to Paris in 1924, where he started own couture house in 1937. In 1946 he created the Laroche Institute together with Guy Laroche.
He died in 1970 and the label with him, but there was a big interest in his clothes again with the boom of vintage clothing and celebrities like Naomi Campbell and Renee Zelweger wore his creations to big events.

Vintage Sunday by Annie Leibovitz

The way I came to make today's Vintage Sunday post was anything but straightforward. Usually when I prepare this post, I want to include some recent news and fit it somehow in the past. I was thinking about Stefano Pilati and how I'm sad he's left Yves Saint Lauren. Don't get me wrong I'm sure Hedi Slimane who's replacing him will do great, but I still feel sorry for Pilati and I hope he's going to find a great new job soon or will start his own fashion label. Thinking about all of this I remembered how sad and shocked I was when Tom Ford left YSL and Gucci. Tom Ford is my favourite designer ever and this is how the story came about. I was going to post about his era for YSL, but I found this amazing editorial starring beautiful Natalia Vodianova shot by Annie Leibovitz for Vogue, interpreting Alice in Wonderland in a very clever and unusual way.
Above we have Alice falling into the rabbit's (Tom Ford) hole wearing YSL Rive Gauche by the designer.
Below you can see Olivier Theyskens and Natalie in his design for Rochas, Karl Lagerfeld and his Chanel Haute Couture creation, Christian Lacroix and Haute Couture dress by him, Stephen Jones who wears a custom-made hat of his own design, Dior Haute Couture by John Galliano, Alexis Roche, Atelier Versace dress and Donatella Versace and Rupert Everett all playing different parts in the story. Awesome editorial, no?

Vintage Sunday - Karolina Kurkova

I am very excited to announce that from tomorrow I'll be a new regular contributor to Czech fashion website and shopping platform FASHIONSPOT.CZ. I'll be writing about latest trends, style, celebrity outfits, fashion events and much more on a weekly basis.
To celebrate this, I think that I kind of have to dedicate today's Vintage Sunday to Czech republic. So I am bringing you few pictures of my favourite Czech model Karolina Kurkova. She started her career in the nineties and shot straight into global stardom. She was the youngest model to appear on the cover of American Vogue back in 2000. 2002 and 2003 were major years, when she appeared on numerous world covers of all top magazines. I picked few from back then, that stood out for me for one reason or another.

Vintage Sunday - THE Oscar gown

Anticipation is mounting for tonight's Oscars and for many it's not about who wins what, but who wears whom! The Oscars are the ultimate dress-up event and I, like many others, can't wait to see all the beautiful gowns the stunning actresses will wear. We have seen so many gorgeous dresses in the past, but the one that somehow stands out for me was worn by Grace Kelly made by Edith Head in 1955, when she won her award. It was beautifully made, didn't need much accessories and Grace Kelly looked amazing in it. What is your memorable Oscar gown?

Vintage Sunday - Whitney tribute

The world has gone to bed/has woken up (depending on your time zone) to a very sad news today. Whitney Houston died at the age of just 48. It's a tragic loss of a true star. I don't know one person who doesn't love at least on of her songs.
My first memory of Whitney is from the movie Bodyguard, so I decided to use this picture for her tribute. Don't we all love that film. Whitney had some amazing fashion moments, but I think above photo is perfect for Vintage Sunday. May she Rest In Peace.

Vintage Sunday - Heidi Klum

For today's Vintage Sunday I found a picture of Heidi Klum from the 90s. Very fresh faced, but hey isn't she getting better with age. She looks stunning these days I think, but she always has. She's been in the news a lot lately, because of her separation with Seal. It makes me really sad. They seemed like a couple who could make it and go the distance, but it just shows how hard it can be to make relationships last. Maybe there is a chance of them getting back together, who knows. I just wish her and her family to find happines in these hard times. Hopefully she can keep her beautiful smile.

Vintage Sunday by Dior

To celebrate Paris Couture fashion week, I decided to dedicate today's Vintage Sunday to one of the original couturiers - Christian Dior, who would have celebrated his 107th birthday yesterday. I am intrigued to see the lates Dior couture show because, as we all know, they haven't named a new creative director yet. The last one (couture show) was a bit of a dissapointment and further proof John Galliano will be hard to replace. Ever the optimist (and a big Galliano fan) I am still hoping they are holding off replacing him, because they don't really want to replace him. Maybe they are waiting for him to get better, the media frenzy dying down and bringing him back. Who knows?
Anyway I'm sure the couture week will be amazing as always and I want to wish to the very talented Mr. Christian Dior belated happy birthday.
And I am going to finish today's post with a quote by the master himself:
"It's not money that make you well dressed, it's understanding style."

Vintage Sunday

For my first Vintage Sunday of 2012, I decided to post something positive and cheerful. What better than a woman who is celebrating and obviously having a great time. And that's exactly my aim for this year. To have lots of fun and hopefully many reasons for celebration. I don't believe in new year's resolutions but I always look back at my year, reflect on the good and the bad and decide on ways how to eliminate the bad and have more good thing. My wish is to always improve myself as a person. Try to be the best I can be and this year the bit I want to concentrate the most on is my career. So far so good.
I am wishing you all wonderful year 2012, full of dreams that have become reality. Dream big!

Vintage Sunday - by Roxanne Lowit

Roxanne Lowit is fashion and celebrity photographer, who has become a celebrity herself. She has a degree in art history and textile design and was a succesful textile designer before becoming a photographer. She got backstage at fashion shows thanks to friends like Jerry Hall and realised that's where she belongs.
Her worked has appeared in countless of magazines including Elle, Vanity fair and Glamour and did a lot of advertising work including Dior. Her book Backstage Dior is one of my favourite photography books. As a big fan of her work as well as John Galliano, it's full of colourful images that gives you insight into the world of Dior from a different perspective. Must-have.

Vintage Sunday - Karen Mulder

For today's Vintage Sunday I decided to put pictures of Karen Mulder. For no particular reason, other than the fact, she was one of my favourite supers. I remember growing up, collecting images of these beautiful women, dreaming to be like them, when I'm older. She doesn't seem as famous as the others and it's a shame. I mean, look at that face! Vintage Sunday

December is just round the corner and with it all the December covers will have come out (although most of them come out in November, so this is kind of good timing for this post.) With New Year coming, I tend to look back over the past year, compare what went well and wrong and make goals/resolutions for the future. Many pople also look back at the best fashion moments, magazine covers and so on of that particular year, but I took it step further and looked at some good December covers from the past. Interestingly two I really liked were both with Kate Moss, shot by Nick Knight. Here is one from 1995. I like how cheeky it is. A naked model on the cover of Vogue? To be honest I don't think anyone but Kate Moss could pull it off. Also how many times every woman in the world said, she has nothing to wear. Countless. But you can count on Vogue to sort your problem. Genius idea! To see the other cover I liked, check my tumblr.

Vintage Sunday by Arthur Elgort

I decided to dedicate today's Vintage Sunday to Arthur Elgort. The born and bred New Yorker originally studied painting, but found it too lonely. He started assisting a photographer until he got his lucky break. He's known for his work for numerous Conde Nast Publications. His debut in 1971 British Vogue caused a sensation, especially his signature emphasis on movement and natural light. His book Model Manual (one of many he released) is full of pictures of the Supers from 1990 and should be in every photography and fashion lover's collection. Vintage Sunday by Arthur Elgort

I'm having a bit of a Christy Turlington week, as you seem to love her as much as I do. She was one of the SUPERS for a reason. She looks so great she doesn't even need much make up or anything else really. This is a great example of that courtesy of Arthur Elgort for Interview magazine 1987. Elgort was a master of showing natural beauty and this photo is simply amazing. I love his work and am planning to show more of it over the coming weeks.

Another good example of great black and white photography and the power of the supers. Can Christy Turlington look any better. Of course the amazing styling of Carlyne Cerf de Dudzeele (whose work I feature a lot in Vintage Sundays) and photograpy by Steven Meisel makes all a match made in heaven. Did you know French Carlyne's editorial work first appeared in Anna Wintour's first issue of Vogue? Lots of great styling work followed including her latest cover for Vogue Italia featuring Rachel Zimmerman. But today let her show us how powerful accessories can really be.
